My Professional Background - Once upon a time, I wanted to be a motivational speaker. Actually, I was a professional motivational speaker for about 5 years.:
Most of my childhood was spent fantasizing about the day I would make my living as a television star. I can’t even count how many inspired scenes and acceptance speeches I rehearsed in my bathroom mirror.

I just never thought my television debut would result from something as ordinary as a garage sale.

Look for me on the next episode of Hoarders.

I’ll be the one buried under a pile of maternity clothes with a fluorescent orange sticker on my head that says 25¢.

I’m sure I’ll have plenty of fun stories to tell next week if I manage to survive Saturday’s post-wide garage sale.

I say IF because there is no combination more lethal to me than:

  • complete strangers at my house at 6:00 a.m.
  • attempting to sell ANYTHING
  • …at 6:00 a.m.
  • listing an item I once treasured for $1.50 and someone asking me if I’ll take $1.25 instead
  • …at 6:00 a.m.

I keep telling myself that the whopping $15 we make on this big, giant hassle will come in handy the next time we want to take the whole family out to dinner at the nearest gas station.

3-day-old hot dog, anyone?

I have a feeling that by 9 a.m. my mantra will be “Always Be Closing.”

As in, “Always Be Closing Your Garage When Strangers Want To Wander Into It At 6:00 a.m.”

Since you will have all of this yard sale experience, I think your mom and I will wait until you are home to have our’s.

@GMan Sorry, G-man. Brian won’t allow me to come to your garage sale because I’ll come home with over half of your crap. I mean, treasures.

My husband used to work for the Home Depot, and that mantra you mentioned has been ingrained in my brain because he would always say that.  I hope your garage sale goes well and that you don’t end up parting with too much sentimental stuff.  But I’ll send some early bird geezers over your way, just to help free up some of the clutter.  I hear maternity is the new mumu.  Have fun!
