No photo sums up our weekend trip to New York City better than this one:

Loved our first weekend away with just the two of us since the kiddos were born.

While we’re off gallivanting in New York City, I thought I would introduce you to the Katy from nearly a decade ago. This post was written on Tuesday, April 13, 2004, on “Postcards from Leeds,” a blog I kept during my year abroad as a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar in Leeds, England. Any comments in brackets are made in present tense to clarify for my Katy in a Corner readers. Warning:  I ate an obscene amount of scones while I lived in England. So, that accounts for the 50 additional pounds I’m toting in these photos.

I have a great idea for a new movie. Picture this:  The Sound of Music meets Edward Scissorhands. Except, rather than taking place in Salzburg, it’s set in Leeds, England. The plot goes something like this…

New York City

Start spreading the news.
We’re leaving today. (Actually, tomorrow.)
We want to be a part of it.
New York, New York.

Sorry, I can’t help myself. I’ve been singing this song ever since Brian gifted me (on Valentine’s Day) with a trip to New York City. Actually he gifted me with a trip anywhere I wanted to go, and I chose New York City.

Prior to my incredibly lucrative career as a professional blogger (ahem), I was a motivational speaker.

I live in a van down by a river

You can laugh. It’s funny to me too.

[This is the same girl whose signature photo features her in a laundry basket eating Pringles, right?]

The Great Motivator

Most of the motivational speaking I did was business-related.

[That’s rich! Did they let you wear those pink, fuzzy slippers while you “motivated” others?]

I conducted seminars on topics like “Conflict Management Skills for Women.”

Okay, you can stop laughing now.

I see it as no coincidence that tornadoes are expected in Kansas around the same time as my parents in the middle of this week. Let the cyclone of gift-giving, hugging, kissing, missed bedtimes, doting, running, playing, splashing, reading, snack times, and squealing commence!

No one does fun like a grandparent. No one.

It’s that time again, friends. The time when I take something that is just sitting idly in our house and give it to one of my wonderful readers who will actually use it.

Truthfully, I’m a bit torn about this item. Not because I don’t think one of you will give it a good home but because I have lots of memories attached to this bag. It went with me all over the world.

Literally.

This week was an exciting one by my standards. I’m pretty sure I put on actual pants at least 3 or 4 times. I wore makeup on more than one occasion. And I even ventured outside the few times the temperatures reached above the 50 degree mark.

And I got to feed a llama. Or maybe it was an alpaca. I’m still not sure.

Regardless, it was pretty exciting.

If you’re one of my lovely gentleman readers who is squeamish about “female things,” now would be a good time for you to find something a bit less unsettling to read. Like 2,000 pages of ObamaCare legislation.

Take care, and we’ll see you tomorrow. Or after the next election.

When the afternoon begins with a professional hair and makeup artist and a photographer at the front door, you know it’s going to be a fun day.
